free jazz (1964)

John Coltrane, tenor sax; McCoy Tyner, piano; Jimmy Garrison, bass; Elvin Jones, drums

This performance shows the mature style of Coltrane. He is locked into a single modal flow with only one small shift and return. He freely moves his melodic ideas into far-reaching melodic and harmonic extensions. He pushes against the stable mode played by the rhythm section. Notice how he has a sense of searching as he plays; searching for one more note, higher than he has played or lower than he has played. The feeling of searching instills a profound nature in his playing.
